The Unknown Soldier is an antiwar song, but not specifically about the Vietnam War, which was going on at the time. The song specifically avoided being overtly about the Vietnam War because the band wanted it to be more timeless and universal.

Some of the sounds in this song include military drums, commands, and a firing squad. The firing squad was reproduced on stage with Robby pointing his guitar at Jim like a rifle, Ray dropping a reverb unit to make a loud pop, and Jim dropping as if he was shot. We (The Doors in Concert) like to do the exact same thing on stage, as you can see in the video above.
